Detroit Recording Studios: The Musical Legacy

Detroit recording studios carry a great contribution in the music industry in general from the early days of Motown until now. A diverse and wide range of genres like pop, rock, gospel, hip-hop, blues, jazz and much more genres has been nurtured in Detroit as numerous historically associate Detroit's music scene with the R&B/ soul vibe of Motown.. Techno is also regarded to be originated in Detroit.

While the modern music scene of Detroit probably began in earnest during the 1940s, it was Berry Gordy and Motown Records that actually put Detroit into the spotlight (musically speaking) during the 1960s and 1970s. The Motown label had become the symbol of a musical movement that produced such legends as Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Diana Ross, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and more. This movement really formed the landscape of R&B/soul music for many decades to come-and Detroit recording studios were obviously part of that legacy.

Since that time, Detroit went on to spawn a diverse array of talent, including Grand Funk Railroad, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Bebe and Cece Winans, The White Stripes, last but not least rap legend Eminem, just to mention a few.

Although of these big names have naturally recorded in Detroit recording studios through the years, the studios themselves also have done projects for a great number of recording artists from outside the region. From rock legends Aerosmith to R&B diva Mary J. Blige, and from British alt-rock band Keane to folk-rocker John Hiatt, audio engineers in Detroit have contributed greatly to the music industry landscape. Needless to say, it doesn't even start to address the list of corporate clients that use Detroit studios (from record labels like Atlantic and Warner Brothers to manufacturers like Coca-Cola and Pizza Hut), or even the countless independent acts that record their projects here.

Even beyond that, a few of Detroit's recording studios have opted to go on their legacy through providing in-studio training to up-and-coming audio engineers and music producers. Among these will be acclaimed Harmonie Park Studios, whose client list includes such names as Motley Crue, P. Diddy, will.i.am, Eminem and Ben Folds Five. Harmonie Park has teamed up with the Recording Connection to provide mentor-apprentice training to recording students, who follow a structured curriculum as they work on actual recording projects within the studio beneath the personal supervision of one of the studio's seasoned audio engineers.

Motown may have made its mark on Detroit, but that is by no means where the city's musical legacy ends. In the early days until today, Detroit recording studios continue to make their particular mark in the music industry.
