A delightful clean and most notably ‘in tune’ quality is vital to a specialist guitarist. I have been restringing guitars for ages and there are three essential rules I keep to each occasion.

Numero uno, a superior set of strings. Oodles of people consider that all strings are alike, not so. In general the dearer ones have a good reason to be. It's chiefly for the reason that they last for a longer time. They're stronger and hold their sustain for much longer than the less costly brand names. Believe this, I have been restringing for countless years. The better the string, the less you restring. The older the string the more harsh on the fingers. If your playing style is just a little brutal, they won't endure as long of course and if you bend a good deal and your hands sweat a bit, these are all elements of a strings life span but most of the time, good strings will stay fresh longer. Various less expensive strings I have to change each gig, the better types, like Elixir, can last as long as 4 gigs. It's less expensive in the long run. They come with a distinctive glaze on the strings and it prevents rusting in order to make them last as long as 4 or 5 times longer than a normal set. The polywebs are the types I take advantage of but there are a lot on the market and it is personal choice.

Ensure to leave enough of the string in order to make a few winds around the machine head as this provides strength to the grip and makes it less prone to go out of tune. Needn't wind too much either as this has the adverse affect. I would say around three to five times around. Three on the thick and five on the thin strings.

After you have all your strings on, tune them, then grab the string in the centre of the guitar and tug on it fairly hard stretching it, you won’t break it unless you pull a good deal too fiercely. Do that with the whole set of strings. Play an open note prior to and after the stretch and you will notice just how much a difference it creates. Then retune the guitar and repeat the process roughly speaking three times or until you stay in tune even following a 2 fret bend. This point is perhaps the most important tip on how to restring a guitar because you may have finished everything else right, but if you haven’t completed this then you are going to be out of tune following your opening bend.

An further tip is to make sure your fretboard is clean. Wipe away all the grime and skin residue from your neck and spray some lemon spray or similar on and rub it in. You can buy these at any nearby music shop. You may also buy some finger ease or similar, to lubricate the strings under your fingers for ease of playing. Strings grab a large amount of dirt so continuously ensure you clean them with a rag when you finished playing.
